Democratic Republic of Congo vehicles market in 2020 reports a sharp drop in an already suffering market as the pandemic influences sales even further. Indeed, 438 units were sold Year To Date until August, losing 51.9% compared to last year. Toyota (-45.5%) maintains the leadership, while Hyundai registered the top 10 hold, losing “only” 21.7%.
Incoming data indicates that the economy was hit by the Covid-19 fallout during the first half of the year, albeit to a lesser extent than initially expected. This was particularly due to the resilience of the all-important mining sector—which accounts for about a third of GDP and nearly all export revenues—as the confinement of workers in mines contributed to an increase in production.
Moreover, prices for the country’s export commodities trended higher for most of Q2 after their coronavirus-induced slump, with prices for copper in particular, its main export, rallying into Q3 thanks to firming demand from China.
In addition, despite remaining somewhat downbeat, economic sentiment improved in August—highlighting slowly recovering confidence among businesses in Q3.
Market Trend Year To Date
In the Democratic Republic of Congo 438 units have been sold until August 2020, reporting a loss of 51.9% compared to last year. This even more negative trend in the market reflects the impact of the pandemic in the region, where infections started growing again exponentially in April.
Brand-wise, Toyota remains the leader by a very large margin, even with a loss of 45.5%, followed by Mitsubishi losing 66%, and by Ford (-23%). Nissan reported the worst top 10 performance by losing 78%. The top 10 hold was registered by Hyundai, with a 21.7% decrease in sales.
Medium Terms Market Trend
The new vehicles market is still very little in the country, addressed by import of used vehicles from Europe and Middle East, and actually the annual sales of new cars represents less than 10% of total vehicles registrations.
In recent years the market was stable around the 2.000 annual sales, while in 2017, the recovery of oil price in the international market, sustained internal demand boosting the registrations of new light vehicles at the new record of 3.304 units, up 74.3%, rebalancing the volume after two years of decline.
However, in 2018 the new vehicles sales were hit by a large drop, which pulled the market below the 2.000 threshold. Indeed, the year ended with 1.965 units sold, losing 40.5% from the previous year.
In 2019 the situation definitely did not improve, as the year ended with 1.319 units sold, loosing 33% from the previous year and keeping the same trend of decline.
In Q1 2020 183 units were sold, a 39% decrease compared to last year, reporting a heavy contraction from the beginning. Subsequently, in the First Half of the year, the market was hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, leading First Half figures to 253 units with a loss of 61.8%.
