Rwanda. Volkswagen’s growth threatens Toyota’s throne in market down 17.4% in 2020

Rwanda vehicles market in 2020 shrinks moderately as the pandemic influences sales. Indeed, 409 units were sold Year To Date until August, losing 17.4% compared to last year. Toyota  (-26.5%) maintains the leadership followed by a rising star, Volkswagen, jumping from 14th to 2nd position.
 Economic Environment
A quarter of a century after the Tutsi genocide, Rwanda’s economy appears to be thriving, with annual GDP growth averaging 7.76% between 2000 and 2019, and growth expected to continue at a similar pace over the next few years.
In light of the country’s chilling history, it is a curious state of affairs that Rwanda, a country once defined by death and conflict, has developed its economy to such an extent that it now aims to be an upper-middle-income country by 2035, and a high-income one by 2050.
 Market Trend Year To Date
In Rwanda 409 units have been sold until August 2020, reporting a loss of 17.4% compared to last year. This negative trend in the market reflects the impact of the pandemic in the region, where infections started growing exponentially in the beginning of June.
Brand-wise, the leader Toyota performs worse than the market average, losing 26.5%, followed by the only top 10 gainer -rising all the way from the 14th position- Volkswagen (+2800%), and by  Suzuki, losing 50% and reporting the worst performance.
 Medium Terms Market Trend
Rwanda vehicles market in recent years has been characterized by an unstable trend, with registrations fluctuating between 500 and 780 units. After the large loss reported in 2016 – when sales fell at 522 – the market immediately recovered, reaching a peak of 780 units sold in 2017. In 2018, sales have been flat, ending at 775.
In 2019, the market was hit by another marginal decline. Indeed, Total sales have been 758, down 2.1% from the previous year.
In Q1 2020 195 units were sold, a 1.6% increase compared to last year, illustrating a stable but recovering market with respect to the previous year. Subsequently, in the second quarter, the market was hit by the COVID-19 pandemic and only 74 units were sold, leading First Half figures to 269 units with a loss of 27.1%.
