Bosnian vehicles market recovers after plummeting again in August, but future sales in 2020 will be challenged by the exponential growth of cases in the country. Indeed, 589 units have been sold in September (-15.5%), leading Year to Date sales at 5.070 (-32.2%).
Market Trend in September
After dropping significantly again in August (-26%), the Bosnian vehicles market started recovering again, but keep in mind that cases started growing exponentially again as the country was hit by the second wave of infections, which lowers our expectations for the performance in the next few months. Indeed, 589 units have been sold in September (-15.5%), leading Year to Date sales at 5.070, a 32.2% decrease compared to the previous year.
Brand-wise, the leader Skoda did not lose sales (+0.7%), while the worst performance was registered by Opel, losing 61.3%. Hyundai recorded the best performance on the leaderboard, gaining 500%.
Medium Terms Market Trend
Bosnian vehicles market in recent years has recovered following the deep fall scored in the 2008-2009 crisis. Moreover, after reporting a sharp drop in 2013, the market has steadily recovered reaching in 2017 10.803 sales – up 21.8% – keeping a positive score trend also during 2018, when registrations grew 1.1% at 9.690.
In 2019, the market held a positive trend, with total sales at 9.866 (+1.8%).
In the first two months of 2020, auto sales were following the recent years’ trend, with Year to Date February sales at 1.585 (+2.8%). Said this, a new era started in March for the entire World, due to the Coronavirus outbreak.
In order to contain the virus, on March 11 the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina had enacted a 2-week shutdown of all schools, high schools and universities, which was later prolonged by all cantons. On 17 March 2020, a state of emergency was declared in all the country and, from the following day, all public gatherings were banned. Moreover, a national curfew was introduced from March 22, for every day from 18:00 until 05:00 until April 24.
As a result, the car market was hit by a huge sales drop in March (-43.1%) with only 579 units sold, ending Q1 at 2.164 (-15.4%).
The real effects of the pandemic can be seen in the First Half sales, which dropped by 37.4% down to 3.258. In July the market seemed to be recovering with 703 units sold (-19.3%), but the trend quickly reversed in August with 520 units sold (-26%).
